In a recent development within the Bowling Green football program, David Cooney, who was appointed as the wide receivers coach by former head coach Scot Loeffler, will not be retained by the new coaching staff. This decision comes amid a series of changes following Loeffler's departure.
Loeffler left to take the Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach position following the completion of the 2024 season. With the head coach position left vacant so close to spring practice, Bowling Green took a swing and hired former NFL running back Eddie George on March 9. In the first week of his hire, he has made multiple changes to the coaching staff including the decision to not retain Cooney.
Prior to his brief tenure at Bowling Green, Cooney served on the Hurricanes staff from 2017 in several different roles. In the last two seasons he was the wide receivers analyst and in the prior three years he was the program’s director of recruiting.
Before transitioning to college football, Cooney made a substantial impact at the high school level. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Miami Southridge Spartans, where he played a role in leading the team to the 2016 8A state championship. Working alongside legendary Miami-area high school coach Billy Rolle, who secured state championships with three different schools, Cooney established a reputation for excellence in player mentorship.
The transition to new leadership often brings about changes in the coaching staff. Incoming head coaches typically assemble their own staff to align with their vision and coaching philosophy. Unfortunately for Cooney, this shift resulted in the decision not to retain him under the new regime.
With the move being sudden, and Cooney having such a strong connection to the Miami area, there will inevitably be speculation about him returning to the Hurricanes program. As of right now, there has not been any reports to support a return to Miami for Cooney.
