Freshman wide receiver Malachi Toney became the first Miami player to record 100 receptions in a single season during the College Football Playoff National Championship Game against Indiana on Monday Night. Toney reached 100 receptions with a six-yard catch in the first quarter.

Toney entered the National Championship Game with 99 receptions for 1,089 yards and nine TDs. The receptions are a Miami single-season record and Toney owns the Miami freshman receiving yardage record. Toney entered the National Championship Game eighth in Miami single season history in receiving yardage.

Charleston Rambo holds the Miami single-season receiving yardage record with 1,172 yards in 2021. Miami finished the 2025 season with seven wins and five losses overall and five and three in the ACC in their final year with Manny Diaz as head coach.

Toney has accomplished multiple Miami records after reclassifying from the 2026 class and not turning 18 until the Hurricanes had played three games this season. The impact from Toney was felt immediately as he had six receptions for 82 yards and one touchdown in the season opening 27-24 win over Notre Dame.

On pace to set Miami career receiving records

With his 100th reception, Toney is halfway to the Miami career record set by Xavier Restrepo during the 2024 season. Restrepo finished the Miami career records of 200 receptions for 2,844 yards and is fourth with 21 TD catches.

Toney has had at least two receptions in every game this season. Syracuse held Toney to two receptions. Toney had four receptions against Florida and at least five in every other game. Toney tied the Miami single-game record with 13 receptions for 126 yards and a TD in the 38-7 win over Pittsburgh in the final regular season game.

Toney added a second reception on the first Miami drive before the Hurricanes had to punt. The first reception for Toney gave Miami a first down after a Mark Fletcher nine-yard run on the opening play. Toney's explosiveness and versatility have been key for Miami throughout the 2025 season.
