Malachi Toney is excited about some of the freshmen in the wide receiver room.
The Miami Hurricanes will have a very experienced group on the field to start the season, but depth is important, and Mario Cristobal has shown that he's not afraid to work in the younger talent when he feels they have earned the opportunity.
That's why it's a big deal when a top player like Toney takes a moment to shout out one of the young guys that has been impressing him the most this spring.
"That guy’s a dog… I probably shouldn’t even be saying this, but I couldn’t hold it… his mindset is undeniable… just poised."

"[Somourian] Wingo, that guy is a dawg. I probably shouldn't even be telling y'all this, but I just couldn't hold it. Just his mindset, it's undeniable," Toney said.Â

The Hurricanes wide receiver room is deep with Toney returning and sophomore Joshua Moore expected to have an increased role. Add in productive transfers Cooper Barkate (Duke), Vandrevius Jacobs (South Carolina) and Cam Vaughn (West Virginia) and the opportunities for the younger guys will be tough to come by.
However, Toney has the belief that iron sharpens iron and it's a good sign for a highly-touted player like Wingo to come in and immediately challenge the older guys. Toney says that Vance Spafford has also stood out early.
"He's a great receiver, light on his feet," Toney said of Spafford. "Great twitch. He catches everything that comes his way."
The quicker the young guys can show they can be trusted on the field and in any situation, the better the Hurricanes will be in 2026. It's a talented group that should give new quarterback Darian Mensah plenty of options and chances to create explosive plays. Miami will hold its spring game on April 18 and that should be a great opportunity for the younger receivers to show their talent, much like Toney did the year before.Â
"I wouldn't compare our wide receiver room to anyone else," Toney added. "There's talent everywhere."
