Malachi Toney could be Miami's savior in not losing 5-star Brysen Wright to Texas

Remember when it was once considered a lock that 5-star wide receiver Brysen Wright was going to commit to Miami? Yeah, that's no longer the case. Several schools are making a strong push to land the Jacksonville talent, with Texas now high on the list. Wright was in Austin to see the UT comeback over Ohio State, which now has the Longhorns among his top schools.

Enter Malachi Toney.

That's right, Toney needs to step in and do whatever he can to remind the in-state product of what it means to stay close to home and put on for The U. Toney is already making moves there by publicly recruiting Wright to Coral Gables. This is something Mario Cristobal has to be loving right now.

Miami can't afford to let 5-star WR Brysen Wright slip away to Texas

While Wright may be a 2028 wideout, his recruitment is heating up and the general feeling is that a commitment is going to come sooner rather than later. For now, Miami and Texas seem to be in a tight battle, but other schools, including Ohio State and Florida, also aren't ready to throw in the towel yet either.

For months, however, it truly felt like the Canes were in the top spot to get this done and not have to worry about a dang thing. A quick trip to Austin has changed things quite a bit there. It's hard to blame Wright for being so impressed with the Longhorns too. He had a great time at Texas, with the Longhorns taking down then No. 1 Ohio State in thrilling fashion. The crowd was electric too.

We get all of that. Still, Wright simply can't forget about the close connection he has with the staff and it's got to be pretty dang eye-opening for him too that one of the top players in the country in Toney is doing what he can to make sure Miami wins this recruiting battle.

Should that happen, it'd give the Canes another incredible WR talent, as he's the No. 1 wideout in the country for '28 and the No. 1 player overall per the 247Sports Composite. For the 2027 class alone, Miami is up to five total five star-commits, with receivers Nick Lennear and A'Mir Sears on the list. Now imagine adding Wright to that WRs room in a couple of years. Goodness.

Texas is putting in a ton of work to prevent that from happening right now and no one can blame Sark for going all-in on Wright. This must serve as an eye-opener for Miami and Cristobal, with another visit with Wright to campus needed as soon as possible. And when that happens, Cristobal needs to make sure Toney is front and center to make Wright realize he belongs with the Canes. Toney is unstoppable on the field with the ball in his hands and now more of the same needs to be showcased off of it out on the recruiting trail. Do your thing here, Malachi.
