Malachi Toney is a great Miami Hurricane, but is he the greatest wide receiver to ever play for the school? What about the greatest player in the 21st century? What about the greatest of all time?
It's a question that requires a lot of context, with the first step of acknowledging that Toney's career with the Hurricanes is far from over. He's played only 23 games as a Hurricane, and he's not even 20 years old yet. But Toney's productivity is so good that his legacy is tough to ignore and, for Dan Le Batard, it's no longer in question.

"Malachi Toney is already the best receiver in UM history, correct?," he asked. "There is no stopping him. If Miami wants to get him the football, they're going to give him the football."
Toney has recorded double-digit catches six times in his career. He has multiple single-game and single-season records and is already 7th on the all-time receiving yards list. So, let's examine Toney's resume for being the best Hurricanes wide receiver of all time.
Malachi Toney is the best underclassman in Miami history
Through less than two seasons, it's safe to say that Toney stands alone for his production and impact. Bernie Kosar led the 1983 Hurricanes to a championship as a redshirt freshman, which was remarkable. Rueben Bain's true freshman season in 2023 is also worth noting.
But Toney was otherworldly in 2025. He led the entire nation in catches. His first game as a 17-year-old who entered college a year early was six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown against Notre Dame. He had his first back-to-back 100-yard games in Week 6 and 7 against FSU and Louisville, respectively.
Toney had a career-high 12 catches against Virginia Tech and then passed that mark and set a school record the following week with 13 catches against Pitt. He closed the 2025 season with 10 catches for 122 yards and a touchdown in the CFP Championship Game against Indiana.
"It's Reggie Wayne, it's Andre Johnson, it's Michael Irvin, it's Santana Moss--those are your No. 1 receivers, but none of them do this," Le Batard added.
Malachi Toney will be the most productive WR in Miami history
Numbers don't always tell the whole story, but in Toney's case, they might. The current all-time receiving yards leader for the Hurricanes is Xavier Restrepo. No offense to Restrepo, because he was a very good player, but no one puts him on the list of top Miami receivers. He wouldn't be in anyone's top five, maybe top 10.
There's a good likelihood Toney overtakes that record before the end of the season. Assuming Miami reaches the ACC Championship Game at minimum, that's six more opportunities. Add in the potential of a CFP run, and we're potentially looking at 9-10 more games this season. Toney will hold the school record for catches before the end of the season, as he's just 25 behind Restrepo in that category.
If numbers don't lie, then Malachi Toney being the best Miami receiver is the whole truth.
Michael Irvin is ready to concede the GOAT label to Toney
Numbers being what they are and taking the changes in the way college football is played into account, "The Playmaker" is still the best to ever do it for "The U". And we're not talking about his Hall of Fame career with the Dallas Cowboys, Irvin's body of work as a Miami Hurricane stands on its own.
But Irvin didn't need to see Toney's 16-catch performance last week against Pitt to concede the spot to the 19-year-old sophomore. He came out and said it after Toney set the single-game yards record against Stanford in Week 1.

"He's so good. I can't believe it," he said. "I can't believe a lot of things. I can't believe, first of all, that we have him, that he's in Miami, and I certainly can't believe that God has left me here long enough to see this young man bless and to see, and to be able to say, this is the greatest receiver."
