Mario Cristobal and Miami appear likely to lose out on blue-chip TE target

Mario Cristobal has led the charge for the Miami Hurricanes to be one of the top programs on the field and on the recruiting trail for the past couple of years, but sometimes you hit a bad stretch and right now, the Hurricanes are finishing short on a few elite players.

Four-star tight end Jaxon Dollar is beginning to trend to Georgia as he approaches an April 30 announcement. Miami and Notre Dame are also in the mix, but the recent predictions are all trending toward the Bulldogs.

Miami may miss out on top TE target Jaxon Dollar

Again, it's two days before Dollar makes his announcement and if the Myson Johnson-Cook recruitment teaches us anything, it's that things can change in the 11th hour. There's no word on if Cristobal and staff are continuing a late push for Dollar or if they have just decided to pivot and move on.

If bad things come in threes, this should be the final pothole on what's otherwise been a smooth recruiting road for Miami. Over the weekend, it was Johnson-Cook, long thought to be the Hurricanes' top choice at running back, who chose Auburn after a late push from the Tigers. And on Monday, it was the shocking news that 5-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, who was considered Miami's top target in this class, is trending to Texas A&M.

Now there's Dollar and while I think he might have been lower on the overall board compared to Matthews and Johnson-Cook, he was still probably the staff's top choice at tight end. It's a cherry on top of a disappointing stretch of recruiting news for Miami.

The Hurricanes still have an excellent 2027 class

There's no need to panic. Even the best of recruiting classes are going to have misses and some disappointment. A lot of top programs want elite players and Miami has been in a position to land many of them and still have plenty more on the board. The sky is falling because Dollar or Matthews are going to commit somewhere else. This is just part of the gig and since Cristobal has arrived, Miami has won a lot more of these recruiting battles than they have lost.
