It might be time to move on from DJ Jacobs.

The Miami Hurricanes have consistently been mentioned as a major candidate to flip the five-star edge rusher from his Ohio State commitment. But there hasn't been a lot of traction on that front during the official visit season, and Jacobs, who generally keeps things close to the vest, appeared to shut things down after a mid-week visit to Columbus.

Mario Cristobal and Miami may have to move on from 5-star DJ Jacobs

Miami's 2027 recruiting class is more or less closed. There are 19 commits, and they have all reportedly shut down their recruitment. Mario Cristobal and staff are shifting focus to the 2028 class and that starts Wednesday evening with their big prospect camp. Many of the major targets in the 2028 and 2029 classes are expected to be on campus for the remainder of the week. There will also be many commits from the current class in town to bond with their future teammates. It's unlikely Miami will host any official visitors.

But there was always the hope that Jacobs would be a last-minute visitor. The speculation was increased when he decided to take a mid-week visit to Ohio State, which would free up his weekend for another trip. But more and more, it looks like Miami is fading out of the picture. In a report done by Brandon Little at A-to-Z Sports, Jacobs' father said that his son is happy with Ohio State.

“He is ready to be a Buckeye," his father said. "He liked the coaches, he loves the players. He liked the city. He definitely still loves Ohio State.”

Jacobs committed to Ohio State in late December, and it was widely reported by Rivals/On3 and others that his decision came down to the wire, and he was between the Buckeyes and Hurricanes up until he had to make his live announcement.

Where does Miami's recruiting class rank nationally?

The Hurricanes have the No. 2 class in the country, according to both 247Sports and Rivals, sitting a few percentage points behind Texas A&M. Miami has four 5-star prospects in its class, the most in the country. Quarterback Israel Abrams, defensive back Donte Wright, wide receiver Nick Lennear and edge rusher Jaiden Bryant all have composite 5-star rankings.

Bryant's flip to Miami from LSU in early June is one of the primary reasons why Miami should be able to peacefully walk away from Jacobs. The Hurricanes also have two local recruits committed, four-star Demarcus Derouche and three-star Jayvon Dawson, who will also play on the edge in college. Four-star linebacker AJ Randle is a player that could be an off-ball linebacker or an edge rusher. So, the Hurricanes are well stocked with depth at the position.

With Jacobs' situation presumably settled, Cristobal is likely to cap the class at no more than 20–23 prospects. The Hurricanes are still trending well for four-star wide receiver Eli Woodard and will leave a spot open for five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews, a local recruit that is committed to Texas A&M.
