Mario Cristobal and Shannon Dawson were not going to get stuck in a cycle of needing high-priced transfer quarterbacks each season and the commitment of CJ Cypher shows the plan to stock the program with top-level arms for the future is being executed to perfection.

Cypher, the top-rated quarterback in the 2029 class, continues the path of stocking the Hurricanes with solid in-house options for the most important position on the field. The Carrolton, Georgia recruit joined his cousin, Class of 2028 offensive lineman Kweli Fielder, in announcing a commitment to Miami.

"After my first visit down there. Not a game day, but the actual visit down there this spring. I saw how hard the players work. I saw how much the coaches care. The coaches are great. I just love the leadership there. The competitiveness down there is what I want to be a part of," Cypher told 247Sports national recruiting analyst Tom Loy.

Mario Cristobal and Miami add 2029 QB CJ Cypher to an already deep room

Miami has gotten everything you could want out of this recent run of transfer quarterbacks. It's safe to say that the Hurricanes wouldn't be in a position to compete for a CFP Championship this season if not for the work that Cam Ward did carrying the offense while Cristobal was continuing to rebuild the roster in 2024 and the leadership and big-game experience that Carson Beck brought last season. Both players are a big reason why the Hurricanes are in a position to go all-in this season with player retention and a top-dollar investment in another high-end transfer QB, Darian Mensah.

But Hurricanes football GM Dennis Smith has spelled out what the philosophy for roster building is and that is to build through recruiting and player retention to ease the reliance on the transfer portal. It's a method that's easier said than done and most coaches pay lip service to it (see Norvell, Mike), but recruiting the right players and building through those efforts is serious stuff for Cristobal. Paying top dollar for transfer quarterbacks year after year can force some difficult choices with player retention. That is something that Miami is trying to avoid.

Mensah will handle the quarterback duties for 2027 at the least and is things go as well as expected this season, he'll have a decision to make on whether to stay in college or enter the NFL Draft. While he is mulling those options, five-star quarterback Israel Abrams will be enrolled and on campus ready to compete. The Hurricanes already have a commitment from in-state prospect Knox Annis, who the staff expects to provide quality competition for Abrams as we approach the end of the decade.

By adding Cypher, the Hurricanes staff hopes to have three arms who will come into the program and provide a long stretch of in-house quarterbacks. It secures the future for Miami at the position and gives Cristobal and Smith the flexibility to construct the roster as necessary without having to budget a large portion of NIL resources for a transfer arm. It's the formula that should keep the Hurricanes' championship window open for years.
