DJ Jacobs will get an up-close and personal look at the Miami Hurricanes this weekend when he makes the trip to Hard Rock Stadium with his younger brother and top 2028 prospect Dawson Jacobs.

The recruiting saga between Miami and DJ Jacobs feels like it has lasted an eternity. We all know about Jacobs' credentials at this point: He's a five-star edge rusher and widely considered the best player in the 2027 class. He was also a Miami lean until a phone call from Ryan Day changed his mind hours before he made his announcement in late December.

Despite Jacobs' commitment to Ohio State, it never really felt like Miami was out of the picture, but after the summer, the distance between Jacobs and the Hurricanes staff seemed to be widening. Jacobs doesn't say too much, but his father has often spoken of his son's solid commitment to the Buckeyes.

But Jacobs has never felt solid. He goes to games everywhere, joining his younger brother (more on him later). Jacobs has already taken in games at Nebraska, Georgia, and Tennessee, along with going to Ohio State early in the season, with plans to visit Columbus again for games against Oregon and Michigan.

DJ Jacobs' return to Miami gives Mario Cristobal another chance at the 5-star recruit

There are a couple of storylines here, and the primary question remains: What's the interest level between DJ Jacobs and Miami? I think it's still pretty active. Mario Cristobal seemed to be comfortable playing this slowly and just hanging around until the Early Signing Period approached, and then trying to make a final move.

And what role does Dawson Jacobs play in all this? The younger brother isn't some run-of-the-mill recruit. He's a legitimate prospect in his own right. Both 247Sports and Rivals/On3 have Dawson as a four-star recruit and ranked inside the top 200 nationally and among the top-20 defensive line prospects in his class. So are the Jacobs brothers a package deal? And if that's the case, wouldn't Dawson Jacobs have committed to Ohio State already?

It must be repeated that the Jacobs brothers give very few hints about what they are thinking. They go to the games, see what they want to see, and then leave everyone wondering what's next. Remember that Tennessee was supposedly the program trending for a Jacobs flip about a month ago, and the Vols have done nothing on the field that would deter that line of thinking. So where do they stand in this recruitment?

Miami's 2027 recruiting class still has room for DJ Jacobs

The Hurricanes had been set at 21 commitments since A'mir Sears pledged at the end of July, but the recent decommitment of four-star offensive lineman Jatori Williams dropped that number to 20. Miami was always leaving room for a few players — specifically DJ Jacobs and five-star offensive tackle Mark Matthews.

Williams' departure is the green light that Cristobal didn't need to be ultra-aggressive with Matthews, who committed to Texas A&M back in the late spring. There's also room for another athlete in this class, and FSU commit Za'Kari Johnson has been openly begging the Hurricanes staff to be that guy.

With the announcement that the Jacobs brothers will be in town this weekend, we're going to see how much Miami can work its way back into their recruitment. A big move here could set the stage for a massive closing stretch and a recruiting class that would rank among the best in history.
