Miami avoid sweep beating Connecticut in final of three-game series

Miami held on after taking a big lead on Sunday and avoided a three-game sweep by Connecticut this weekend in Coral Gables.

After Connecticut scored two runs in the top of the first inning, Miami took control with five in the third and three in the fourth and held on for a 15-11 win on Sunday in Coral Gables. Miami avoided a sweep in the three game series with the win over Connecticut on Sunday.

Miami shortstop Jake Ogden led Miami on Sunday with three hits in five at-bats, three runs scored and five RBIs. The top eight starting batters in the order had hits for Miami. In addition to Ogden, Derek Williams had three hits and Renzo Gonzalez had a pair.

Grant MacArthur opened the scoring with a two-run home run to give Connecticut a 2-0 lead. Max Galvin started the Miami scoring with a home run to leadoff the bottom of the second inning. Miami added four more runs with a single, a throwing error and two walks to take a 5-2 lead after two innings.

Miami added to its lead in the third inning with an RBI ground out by Ogden and a two-run single by Daniel Cuvet to go in front 8-2 after three. The game went back and forth in the fifth and sixth innings. Connecticut and Miami both scored three runs in the fifth and two each in the sixth and Miami led 13-7 after six innings.

Connecticut received HRs from Tyler Minick in the fifth and MacArthur in the eighth. MacArthur and Minick each finished with four RBIs on Sunday. Galvin and Dorian Gonzalez each had two RBIs and Cuvet drove in three to back Ogden for Miami offensively.

All four Miami pitchers allowed runs on Sunday. Will Smith earned the win and Jackson Cleveland pitched the final 1.2 innings to close the victory for Miami. Connecticut starting pitcher Tommy Ellisen allowed five runs, four earned in 1.1 innings to take the loss. The Huskies used six pitchers in the loss with three allowing four earned runs.

Connecticut took control with three runs in the top of the first inning in game two on Saturday. Miami rallied with one run in the bottom of the first inning, three in the third and one in the fourth to lead 5-3 after five innings. Connecticut answered with three runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and five in the eighth to take control.

Miami added two in the eighth and one in the ninth inning to close the final score to 12-8. Connecticut's second through fourth hitters Minick, Ryan Daniels and MacArthur combined for seven hits in 12 at-bats with seven runs scored and seven RBIs.

Cuvet had three hits in four at-bats with two runs scored and four RBIs that included a HR for Miami on Saturday night. Griffin Hugus took the loss for Miami in by far his worst performance this season allowing six runs, five earned in 4.2 innings. Miami lost the opening game of the series 7-2 on Friday night.
