Rob Evans gave Miami an exceptional start, but the bullpen lost a 6-1 lead after seven innings as Florida State beat the Hurricanes 7-6 in 11 innings on Thursday night. Miami lost any chance at a double bye in the ACC Tournament with the loss on Thursday in Tallahassee.
Florida State scored first on a Hunter Carns home run in the bottom of the second inning. That was the only run Florida State would score through the first seven innings. Florida State has six hits through the first seven innings, but left four runners on base.
Evans pitched 7.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Miami scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning off of Florida State ace Wes Mendes and added two more in the seventh inning off of Seminoles' relievers Cade O'Leary and Kevin Mebil.
Alonzo Alvarez hit a three-run HR in the fourth to put Miami ahead 3-1. A Gabriel Milano fielder's choice scored Dylan Dubovik, who doubled earlier in the inning, to put Miami ahead 4-1 later in the fourth. Miami maintained its 4-1 lead until the seventh inning.
Miami extends the lead
Derek Williams grounded into a double play to score Fabio Peralta to extend the Miami lead to 5-1. An Alex Sosa single scored Jake Ogden later in the seventh inning to give Miami a 6-1 lead. Alvarez filed out to RF with the final out to end the seventh inning. Miami seemed to be in control.
John Stuetzer and Brayden Dowd hit consecutive HRs in the bottom of the eighth inning off of Miami closer Lyndon Glidewell to get Florida State within 6-3. A Carter McCulley sacrifice fly to the wall in center field that nearly tied the game, scored Gabe Fraser and cut the Florida State deficit to 6-4.
Eli Putnam followed McCulley with a no doubt pinch hit home run to tie the game at six. Glidewell struck out Stuetzer and Jack Durso got Stuetzer to fly out to CF to end the ninth. Florida State threatened in the 10th inning, but Miami used two caught stealings to send the game to the 11th.
Florida State retired the last 13 Miami batters. Miami got two outs sandwiched around an infield single by Ben Barrett. Sebastian SantosOlson entered the game as the third pitcher of the game for Miami with one out and Barrett on first base. Stuetzer was hit with one ball and two strikes and Dowd walked on a 3-0 pitch to give Florida State the 7-6 win.
Miami drops to 35-16 overall and 15-13 with the loss. The Hurricanes will attempt to hold on to a first round bye in the ACC Tournament next week in Charlotte. With one win in its last two games against Florida State, Miami would ensure it would begin play in the ACC Tournament on Wednesday in Charlotte.
