Miami shutout for second time this season in series opener at North Carolina

North Carolina got the only runs they needed in the fifth inning to win the opener of a three-game series versus Miami on Friday night.

Griffin Hugus pitched a complete game, but two North Carolina pitchers shutdown Miami in a 2-0 win on Friday night in Chapel Hill. Hugus pitched eight innings, allowing three hits, two earned runs, with a walk and four strikeouts. Jake Knapp pitched seven innings for the win and Walker McDuffie pitched the final two for his second save.

Knapp allowed five hits without a walk and 10 strikeouts. McDuffie allowed one hit without a walk and four strikeouts. Miami shortstop and leadoff hitter Jake Ogden was the only Miami player with two hits on Friday night. Daniel Cuvet, Derek Williams and Dorian Gonzalez each struck out three times for Miami.

North Carolina got the only run they needed when Sam Angelo singled to score Alex Madera. Three batters later a Jackson Van De Brake sacrifice fly scored Tyler Bass. Madera and Van De Brake had the other two hits for North Carolina on Friday night.

Miami drops to 14-13 overall with the loss and is now 1-6 and in last place in the ACC. North Carolina is 20-6 overall and improves to 5-5 and in eighth place in the ACC. Brian Walters, who is 2-1 with a 7.00 earned run average, is scheduled to start for Miami on Saturday, with Sunday's starter to be determined.

Jason DeCaro, who is 3- 2 with a 3.94 ERA, is the starting pitcher for North Carolina on Saturday, with Aiden Haugh at 3-2 with a 1.93 ERA the starter for the Tar Heels on Sunday. Miami faces a North Carolina pitching staff the remainder of this weekend that entered the series second in the ACC with a 3.62 ERA.

Miami entered the weekend 15th with a .273 batting average and a 5.80 ERA. First pitch is on Saturday at 2 PM and the series finale on Sunday will have a first pitch at 1 PM Eastern Time. Miami returns home on Wednesday to host Bethune-Cookman.
