Miami signee Caleb Gaskins — a five-star forward from Christopher Columbus — is set to play in the 49th annual McDonald's All American boys game tonight at 9 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Caleb Gaskins will be an important newcomer for Jai Lucas and Miami
Gaskins put up 22.5 points, 9.1 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game this season for Columbus, along with 1.0 steal and 0.8 blocks across 31 games. That production followed a strong junior year on a loaded Columbus team.
Gaskins is the second-highest rated recruit in Miami program history in the 247Sports Composite and he is currently slotted No. 13 nationally, No. 3 among power forwards and No. 3 in Florida.
Gaskins is the seventh Hurricane to earn McDonald's All America honors, joining Tito Horford, Steve Edwards, Darius Rice, Dewan Hernandez, Lonnie Walker IV and Jalil Bathea.
The McDonald's All American game is loaded
All 24 players are ranked inside the ESPN 100, including the top seven prospects in the class, headlined by No. 1 Tyran Stokes, No. 2 Jordan Smith, No. 3 Cameron Williams and No. 4 Caleb Holt. Gaskins is on the West roster, and he will share the floor with names like Stokes, Holt and Williams.
Sprite Jam Fest was held Monday night, and the games continue to benefit the Ronald McDonald House and its local chapters, as they have since the event's inception.
History comes with the McDonald's All American game
The first McDonald's All American team was named in 1977 and included Magic Johnson. The first actual game tipped off in 1978 in Philadelphia. Michael Jordan dropped 30 points in the 1981 game and future Miami Heat star Alonzo Mourning earned co-MVP honors in 1988 after putting up 16 points in an East win.
