Mario Cristobal received some amazing news Wednesday with the 247Sports update that gives the Miami Hurricanes four five-star recruits in the 2027 class and an improved national ranking to No 2.
But there was some disappointment after some On3 predictions had four-star tight end Anthony Cartwright III ending up at Oregon. Cartwright III was just on campus in Miami this past weekend for his official visit.

Cartwright got forecasted to Oregon today. Good luck to the young man. We’ll get a dude at that position for the 2027 class 💯. pic.twitter.com/URUKm4m3si

4-star TE Anthony Cartwright III took his official visit to Miami last weekend
The timeline of this is surprising since Cartwright was one of the few official visitors on campus last weekend that was not already committed to the Hurricanes. As a matter of fact, five-star quarterback Israel Abrams spent a lot of time with the 6-foot-5, 235-pound tight end from Detroit.
"They tried to get me to commit. With Izzy here, I got to spend a lot of time with Izzy, seeing how I bond with him, and I bond with him very well," Cartwright told Gaby Urrutia of 247Sports. He said, 'You know you a safety blanket. You know you're going to touch that ball.'"
The 2027 Miami Hurricanes class is still missing a TE commit
Cristobal and the staff didn't have a lot of tight ends on the target list, but Cartwright was remaining prospect the staff was hoping to land at the position after five-star recruit Jaxon Dollar committed to Georgia.
Tight end is probably the position that gets the least amount of attention among fans. We all know how important the position is, but unless it's a top guy, the fanfare just isn't there despite Miami's great success in developing tight ends. If Cartwright's recruitment continues to trend away from Miami, it will be interesting to see where Miami decides to pivot or whether the staff will just decide to punt until the 2028 class.
The On3/Rivals predictor gives Oregon nearly a 50 percent chance to land Cartwright and the Hurricanes are a major long shot behind Michigan and Michigan State. Cartwright is scheduled to take his official visit to Oregon on June 19.
Does Miami have other options at tight end if Anthony Cartwright III commits elsewhere
The good news is Miami signed two tight ends in the 2026 class, Gavin Mueller and Israel Briggs, both four-star recruits. Cristobal could easily decide to punt on grabbing a tight end in this class and find one for 2028. There's also a chance that Miami could stay local and grab a developmental player in the tri-county area that the coaches believe fits the athletic profile to be a good tight end down the road. Many tight ends don't play the position regularly in high school, so the prospects of finding a good athletic local recruit worth taking a flyer are high.
Picking up a tight end in the 2027 transfer portal is also an option, and it usually doesn't require the investment of higher-profile positions. There's no need to panic here because there are some young tight ends on the roster, but the Hurricanes have been so successful on the trail, any recruiting loss stings a little.
