Canes can cross one QB off their list for a target from the transfer portal

Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes have one less quarterback to target in the transfer portal after he announced he would stay with his current team.

With Carson Beck heading out the door, the Miami Hurricanes are going to have to rely on the transfer portal to find a starting quarterback once again.

As the Canes wait in anticipation for the portal to open in January, one player won't be on the list of candidates. South Carolina starting QB LaNorris Sellers announced he would return to play another season for the Gamecocks.

Sellers had been one of the most intriguing players for Miami as a quarterback with two years of starting experience and a lot of praise from college football analysts across the country.

Canes having to broaden their QB search

With Sellers staying with the South Carolina Gamecocks, the Hurricanes now have to hope that other top-tier candidates decide to leave their current program and hit the portal instead.

Miami's backup quarterbacks Emory Williams and Luke Nickel barely played any snaps during the regular season and aren't actual options for starting quarterback in the near future. So, just like last year when the Canes landed Beck, the team will have to look for a transfer target again.

Quarterbacks Miami could target in the transfer portal

  • Bryce Underwood, Michigan (hasn't entered)
  • Kenny Minchey, Notre Dame
  • Jaden Craig, UCF

The options aren't exactly abounding for the Canes at the moment, but there is a possibility that they land a high-level quarterback like Bryce Underwood if he decides to leave Michigan following the team's current scandal.

Another option is Dayton Raiola, the younger brother of Nebraska starting quarterback Dylan Raiola, who is in the class of 2026 and decommitted from the Cornhuskers earlier this year.

Simply put, Sellers is off the board, and the Hurricanes will have to turn their attention in another direction for their next quarterback, whether that be from the transfer portal or an elite high school prospect who is about to hit the college level.
