Michigan trying to steal 5-star A'mir Sears from Miami will be a giant waste of time (for now)

Mario Cristobal and the Miami Hurricanes are closing in on adding another five-star prospect to the 2027 recruiting class.

A'mir Sears, who was a major target to be the centerpiece of the Hurricanes' 2028 class, reclassified for 2027 and will play his final year of high school at Christopher Columbus High School in Miami. The dynamic two-way athlete was considered the top overall player of the 2028 class by 247Sports. Upon his reclassification, Sears is still a top-20 national prospect on both 247Sports and Rivals/On3, and retained his five-star designation.

Sears will make his announcement at 5 p.m. ET Friday on the CBS Sports Network HQ channel. The Rivals/On3 predictor gives Miami a 97% chance to get his commitment.

What other schools are in the A'mir Sears' recruiting battle?

Michigan appears to be the program that has made the biggest charge and the Wolverines have the kind of financial resources that will make anyone, especially a teenager, think hard. LSU and Texas A&M are also on the list, and we know how much the Aggies can put a wrench in Miami's plans to land a local recruit, but neither seem to pose the kind of threat that Michigan does.

Miami was Sears' first offer and the school that he's spent the most time with over the past two years. He's been to several Hurricane football recruiting events, like 305 Day and the big summer pool party. Sears has also camped with Miami and had a chance to work out for the coaching staff, so the relationships are there.

But even if Sears chooses Miami today, it doesn't mean Michigan is going to go away on August 1. The Wolverines staff is preparing for a long recruiting battle and the Miami staff will have to stay diligent.

How does A'mir Sears' fit into Miami's recruiting class?

Sears is a playmaker on either side of the ball, and he is an elite talent at both wide receiver and defensive back. There have been comparisons to Travis Hunter by a few people, and I could certainly see Sears working out at both positions at some point. My prediction is he will start at wide receiver before eventually settling in at defensive back.

Why would Sears start his college career at wide receiver? Malachi Toney. There's no reason to believe that Sears is anything other than the big Hurricanes fan he claims to be, and if that's the case, he is going to want to play one year with Toney, who is likely off to the NFL after the 2027 season. That's why this reclassification move makes a ton of sense. 

Sears is close to Toney, defensive back Bryce Fitzgerald and several members of the current Hurricanes recruiting class. There are a lot of players he either wants to suit up with before they leave for the next level or play out his college career with. 

Will Sears' commitment give Miami a No. 1 recruiting class?

It should. The way the rankings work with these classes is a mixture of quantity and quality. There's no question the Hurricanes have the best class in terms of average stars by rankings, but the 20 overall commitments is a little lower than the other teams that are competing for that honor (Texas A&M, Oregon, Oklahoma, etc.). 

That being said, no one else in the country can claim to have five recruits with a five-star designation. If the Miami class isn't the best in the nation, the math just isn't mathing.
